Ming Xi (Ford) and Cora Emmanuel (Ford Women) last week participated in the American Foundation for AIDS Research’s (amfAR) 19th annual Cinema Against AIDS gala held during the Festival de Cannes. Former Vogue Paris editor in chief Carine Roitfeld curated the evening’s festivities, which included a runway show featuring looks from Tom Ford, Versace, and Christopher Kane. Over $11 million was raised on the night. [Models.com]

Sidney Toledano, the president and chief executive of Christian Dior, has admitted to being somewhat surprised by his brand’s dramatic rise in profits, which exceeded $1 billion for the first time, following the summary dismissal of the disgraced former creative director John Galliano. “I always thought we absolutely needed an artistic director…They, and their charisma, are what creates breakthroughs.” That these profits accompanied underwhelming collections by interim designer Bill Gaytten is all the more astonishing. With Raf Simons now in charge of design surely the sky will be the limit for profits. [Telegraph]

Simon Spurr revealed to the New York Times that perhaps one day he might return to the label from which he abruptly departed two months ago. “I have high hopes to come back to the company one day. I’m looking forward to whatever the next step would be, whatever it is.” All eyes will be on Spurr Monday night for the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards where his is nominated for best menswear designer. [New York Times]

Evidently more athletes are wearing eyeglasses. Stephen Dubner of Freakonomics Radio has noticed the likes of NBA stars LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Kevin Garnett, and Kevin Durant wearing eyeglasses during press conferences and wanted to determine reasons why. Turns out many of these athletes in fact have perfect vision, but are demonstrating, wait for it, their suitability for promoting products. This admission will likely prompt guffaws in the sports world, but in the image-conscious fashion industry almost no one would bat an eye. [Marketplace]
