MasterCard has drawn frontpage attention from WWD for its research into spending habits of an anonymous pool of 100,000 so-called “high-end shoppers,” those people who made at least one purchase in the previous calendar year at one of nine high-end retailers. The credit card giant discovered that these shoppers are not exclusive with their money and in fact, gasp, spend more at discount and lower-priced chains. WWD correctly points out that a shoppers who have the means to make all purchases from Saks Fifth Avenue cannot in actuality find everything they need. Fact is, neither Saks nor Bergdorf Goodman sell Silly String. If we cast the net a bit wider, then other curiosities could come to fore. MasterCard intelligence about, say, the folks who made The Sunday Times Rich List, if any could even be produced, might even reveal these elites also use 16 digit numbers not including dates of expiry for purchases high and low. Style.com delves into the gender gap in achievement and recognition in fashion design. According to Style.com the numbers are not kind for women who make up approximately 85 percent of graduates from Parsons The New School for Design and yet have comprised scant few Council of Fashion Designers of America award winners over the years. The root of the inequality, Style.com argues, may in fact have to do with the demands of raising children. [Style.com]
If you were unable to score entry to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a trophy date because some D-lister got there first, then breath a sigh of relief because C-SPAN was on hand to cover the annual banquet of bonhomie. Don’t let the five letters C, S, P, A, and N worry you. Unlike C-SPAN’s 160,000+ hour archive, this nearly 18 minute video is unlikely to induce sleep. [C-SPAN]
