Madison Avenue, or at least the Upper East Side slice of the north-south avenue running from Madison Square Park at 23rd Street to the Madison Avenue Bridge at 138th Street, is suddenly vibrant following its ongoing transfusion of downtown blood from designers Rag & Bone at 909, Zadig & Voltaire at 992, and most prominently Proenza Schouler at 822. The retailer migration uptown has been fueled in part by rents that are amenable to younger designers keen on breaking into this coveted Manhattan market. Andrew Rosen, a major stakeholder in Proenza Schouler amongst other labels, sees it thusly, “The customer has been turned onto these brands, whether they were going downtown to get them or to Barneys or Bergdorf’s to get them. Why should they have to go downtown to get it?” The answer is simple, they no longer will. [WWD]
British Vogue hosted its first-ever Vogue Festival on the weekend. The two-day fashion event held at the Royal Geographical Society in London boasting a keynote speech by Diane von Furstenberg and panel discussions with Tom Ford, Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana amongst others insured that Coachella wasn’t the only weekend festival of note. Conceived by British Vogue editor in chief Alexandra Shulman, the sold-out event was sponsored by luxury mobile phone company Vertu. [Business of Fashion]
THEESatisfaction, the musical duo of Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White, have released a musical video directed by Dream Hampton for the single “QueenS” off their new album awE naturalE (Sub Pop). The colorful video would not at all be out of place on this month’s Mood Board as its vocalists melodically intone, “Leave your face at the door. Turn off your swag and check your bag.” [YouTube]
