In the summer fashion calendar vacuum that invariably envelops the period between the resort and couture shows and the spring ready-to-wear collections it is no surprise to see speculation (rumors) and proper analysis, albeit occasionally, dominate the industry news cycle. Add a tantalizing fashion house appointment to the mixer and the result can be intoxicating. This in part explains the intense July interest in Hedi Slimane’s retrobranding of Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris, which reportedly will apply only to the house’s ready-to-wear lines (and not the beauty lines) as inspired by the very first such line, Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, launched in 1966. Business of Fashion today brings to bear proper anaylsis on the subject, thereby providing added clarity on an otherwise hazy topic. [Business of Fashion]
Speaking of summer news vacuums, WWD today looks back upon the infamous showdown between French and American designers at the Palace of Versailles in 1973. A new documentary by first-time filmmaker Deborah Riley called Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution pores over the dramatic events of the evening of November 28 in which Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein and Stephen Burrows competed against Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Emanuel Ungaro. The Americans apparently battled adversity with a show-stopping 35 minute presentation that included a performance by Liza Minelli and a casting of a dozen African-American models before royals and celebrities. Riley’s documentary tells the harrowing story in detail. [WWD]
Hair stylist Eugene Souleiman has compiled a 38 minute fashion mix that can be heard today on the SHOWstudio blog. Opening with Brian Eno’s 1973 tune “Baby’s on Fire” the mix’s ample volume puts the needle well into the red. [SHOWstudio]
And speaking of mixes, Diplo knows a thing or two million about them and duly mixed two hours of jams for BBC Radio 1Xtra and Radio 1 over the weekend. “It’s like a porridge,” said the man himself. Innit, though? [BBC]

Thank you for the mention on your blog. Many of the wonderful models who graced the stage in 1973 were of course Ford Models!
