If the name of photographer Matthew Kristall rings a bell, then it’s for good reason. He is the inspired presence behind the camera for many a T Magazine story and that memorable shot of Ford’s Julia Saner blowing a kiss at the closure of the Christian Dior F/W 2011 show in March. His knack for illustrating a story rather than dictating an autopsy is noteworthy. Kristall’s recent story appearing in Remix #70 2011 featuring Ford Men’s Ethan James and Linus Gustin is no exception. The 70th issue of this New Zealand magazine quaintly adopts New York City for its theme. To that end, the Jason Rider-styled story titled “Lost Paradise” takes what well could be the Far Rockaways as its setting. The shoot itself took place this spring before Ethan had his hair cut in April, which readers will recall from those incredible Polaroids shot on the rooftop of our Fifth Avenue building. Ethan, half-heartedly wrestling with another boy, enters the frame wearing jacket and trousers by Z Zegna, sweater by N. Hoolywood, and shoes by Church. Exhausted by his exertions, the West Michigan native is next seen curled up on a sand dune. For Linus’s entry the Swede immediately cuts to the chase by sprawling himself over the beach wearing a suit by Court Roll, shirt by Rag & Bone, and shoes by Diesel. The slow motion, dreamlike quality to Kristall’s story is fittingly echoed in the tousled tweeds worn by Ethan James and Linus Gustin, which together help comprise this lost paradise.
