Were you to proclaim the very declaration contained in this editorial’s title, “All Roads Lead to Milan,” then it is likely you would not be met with suppressed laughter so long as you were also dressed head to toe in Salvatore Ferragamo. Throw on a silly mask or party hat and spout similarly cartography-defying logic and I reckon the designer label that began as a boot shop on Hollywood Boulevard in the early part of the last century still would have you covered. This is certainly the case for the 6’2″ (188 cm) West Londoner called Ian O’Brien who features in this strictly-Ferragamo Wonderland February / March 2011 story by photographer Thomas Whiteside and fashion editor Way Perry. Dressed in the Spring / Summer 2011 menswear line by Massimiliano Giornetti, Ian makes the story’s daft title at least metaphorically plausible. The cool and relaxed feel of the first look, a breezy knitwear top and pleated cotton trousers, not only compliments the already handsome Ian, but sort of underpins this roads business. But, and it should be emphasized, this is fashion, not logic. To that end Ian O’Brien resoundingly succeeds and might even have convinced me that, well, sod it, all roads do indeed lead to Milan.
