In the world of fashion, it’s not often that dads get their due credit. In anticipation of Father’s Day, we asked our models to share what they learned from the men that raised them. At the end of the day fathers know best, and even dads deserve a moment in the spotlight. Here, Ford Image’s Emily weighs in on hers.

WHAT IS YOUR DAD’S STYLE?

He has been dressing the same way since the 60s–only wears flip flops and occasionally converse high tops. He wears Levi’s and T-shirts in a variety of colors that he claims he’s owned since he was in his twenties. I love how he dresses. It’s his uniform.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOUR DAD EVER GAVE YOU?

There are a lot of things my dad has taught me, but one of the greatest things he gave me was independence. He always told me to never apologize for who I am and taught me to make my own decisions and live a life based on my wants and desires, not someone else’s.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEMORY WITH YOUR DAD?

My dad and I have done a lot of traveling together so there are countless memories of us on the road or in different countries, spanning from when I was really young to last year. But some of my earliest memories are my favorites. He took several years off to stay at home with me when I was in preschool.  We would spend our days creating adventures–dumpster diving, spying on neighbors, taking long walks and making stuff. He was a great sport even when it came to dolls. He tells me I was three when I took this picture.

WHO IS YOUR DAD’S FAVORITE MUSICIAN OR WHAT IS HIS FAVORITE SONG?

He loves the blues and rock and roll. I grew up with music always playing in our house. I would say Bob Dylan or The Band might be his favorites, but as far as favorite song goes I can’t say—maybe a Leonard Cohen song or a blues musician.

HOW HAS YOUR DAD AFFECTED WHO YOU ARE TODAY?

I know everyone says that their parents are “the best” or special, but I really do feel that my Dad is the kind of person I would want to be good friends with even if he wasn’t related to me, as funny as that sounds. Like I said, he’s taught me many things, but the example he has set for me is truly the thing that has impacted me the most. He is an incredibly creative painter, sculptor and home-builder, waking up every day to make something no matter what. He is a dedicated and loving friend, who always thinks of others best interests and has shown me how important generosity is, even when it is unrewarded. He is a rare breed, and I’m lucky enough to call myself his daughter!
